Mechanical Quick Couplers
A mechanical quick coupler allows fast attachment changes without hydraulic assistance. The operator stops the machine, gets out briefly to engage or release the locking mechanism, then returns to the cab. The process takes two to three minutes rather than the fifteen to thirty that traditional pin removal requires.
Mechanical couplers are the most affordable option and are well-suited to operations where attachment changes happen once or twice a day rather than multiple times per shift. They’re robust, simple to maintain, and have no hydraulic lines to manage.
Best for: Contractors who switch attachments occasionally and want a reliable, low-cost solution.
Hydraulic Quick Couplers
A hydraulic quick coupler connects to the machine’s auxiliary hydraulic circuit and allows the operator to lock and release attachments entirely from the cab. No dismounting required. On a busy site where a machine switches between a bucket and a breaker multiple times per shift, this saves a measurable amount of time every single day.
The tradeoff is a higher upfront cost and the need for compatible auxiliary hydraulic flow on the carrier machine. Most modern excavators above 3 tons have auxiliary hydraulics as standard, but it’s worth confirming before ordering.
Best for: Contractors and fleet operators running multiple attachments on a single machine across varied daily tasks.
Hydraulic Tilting Quick Couplers
RSBM’s tilting quick coupler (also called a tilt hitch or swing cylinder coupler) adds a lateral tilting function to the standard hydraulic coupler. The bucket or attachment can be tilted left or right from the cab, typically up to 45 degrees each way, giving the operator precise control over cut angle without repositioning the machine.
This is particularly valuable for drainage work, slope grading, and any application requiring an angled cut. It delivers most of the benefit of a tiltrotator at a significantly lower price point.
Best for: Road construction, drainage contractors, and any operator doing regular slope or batter work.
Key Specification Questions
Before ordering any quick coupler, have the following information ready:
Pin diameter and centre-to-centre spacing. This is the most critical dimension. A coupler that doesn’t match your machine’s stick pins precisely will create dangerous play and accelerate wear on both the coupler and the stick. Always measure or confirm from your machine’s specification sheet rather than estimating by tonnage class alone.
Machine weight class. Couplers are rated by machine operating weight. Running an undersized coupler on a heavy machine creates a safety risk; running an oversized coupler adds unnecessary weight and reduces bucket capacity efficiency.
Auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure. For hydraulic and tilting couplers, confirm your machine’s auxiliary circuit output against the coupler’s minimum requirements. Most RSBM couplers require 30–80 litres per minute flow at 150–250 bar, but this varies by model.

Safety: What to Look For
Quick couplers are load-bearing components, and a failure in operation is a serious safety event. When evaluating any coupler, look for:
- Dual locking mechanism — a primary hydraulic or mechanical lock plus a secondary safety catch that prevents accidental release if the primary fails
- Visual indicator — a clear way for the operator to confirm the attachment is fully locked before lifting
- Rated working load — the coupler should be rated at or above the machine’s rated lift capacity at the relevant working radius
